 If you are just starting, GDI is probably your best option because of its ease of use.  Although NOD has a quicker initial growth, the GDI units are much better in the long run.  I've seen a few #1 NOD players but the majority are GDI.  Check out each unit carefully before you research them and make an educated decision.  Everyone sets up their army differently and doing each one at a time stunts your growth.
