The GDI Pitbull
The Pitbull is your first official research because it's cost is very low. Usually after attacking an outpost, which should give sufficient credits and research points to get it. Not really a useful unit as it is too way too fast and it's best use it against defense anti-air wall structures which are usually along with a few anti-tanks. They're weak armored but can be useful to take out pesky barbs and tank traps that stand in front of your army. However, don't expect them to get far, keep them out back!
The upgrade for the pitbulls is so-so, it will disable infantry units within range. I don't use Pitbulls and I have seen them attacking me and, well, I was happy the attacker took Pitbulls. It's like the Guardian, should only be a starter unit.
*The defense Pitbull is used to take down aircraft and does a rather decent job at it too. Not the best anti-air unit but it's could be the most effective considering its speed. If you use a wide defense design then Pitbulls are a must to cover as much area as possible. Most players crop them, or "tie them in" by placing a wall near them so they don't move.

I've used it a few times, not really impressive but it's something. Let's just say there's better units out there that do a lot better than this combo.
